A local inventor will be seen pitching his product to the “dragons” on the season premier of the CBC’s Dragon’s Den Sept. 29.“It was a pretty nerve-wracking experience,” recalls Dan Dykens, the inventor of The Litterhouse, a house-shaped litter box for cats. “They ask you about a million questions. It was quite a gruelling process.”Dragon’s Den is a reality show where entrepreneurs pitch their business concepts and products to a panel of Canadian business moguls who have cash to “make a deal.”Dykens went on the show with his business partner, Rob English, asking the moguls for marketing money. Dykens came up with the idea for a decorative litter box about 10 years ago when he was moving into an apartment with his cat, Sox.“Most people put their litter box in their basement so it’s out of sight. I didn’t have room in the apartment, so I needed a box I could put in my living room,” Dykens says. The former law enforcement officer came up with the idea of covering the litter box with a lid in the shape of a house. With the help of his sister, Barb Bruce, who has a business background, Dykens spent the next few years trying to patent his invention and get a prototype made — making modifications along the way. They added a walkway to the litter box — where the cat is forced to “wipe” its feet as it exits the box. The house also has built-in handles that look like gables for easy removal of the lid and a lip inside that forms a smooth seal preventing litter spills.Since last spring when the product was finally manufactured, over 54 independent pet stores, including Doogan’s Pet Emporium in Orangeville, have begun to carry the product; it’s also available on the Litterhouse website at www.litterhouse.ca.This was the local company’s third attempt to get on the Canadian TV show. They just found out last week that their episode would be aired.“Any exposure on television is good exposure,” says Bruce, president of the company. “Having the product aired on television we expect will increase our sales.”The local business owners didn’t want to ruin the show by publicizing whether they get a deal or not.Dykens did say he has gained valuable insight as a result of the experience. These days, when he sees his invention in the front window of pet stores, he feels a surge of pride.“It’s a heartwarming feeling. It’s been a long fight,” Dykens says. “To be the ‘father’ of an invention, it’s incredible.”Viewers can vote for The Litterhouse as the product that will get a deal on the Dragon’s Den website (www.cbc.ca/dragonsden); and, if the company gets the most votes, they could win an entrepreneur prize of $75,000. The Dragon’s Den airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. on CBC beginning Sept. 29.

http://www.mycatspace.com/me/rodfrench/blog/2008-08-21Cat-Litter-Box-Types--A-Comparison-Of-Value-And-Functionality-
Is This What Your Litter box Looks Like?
Does this cat litter box look like it is solving all the problems that cat owners endure? This is the tipical litterbox that 40 million homes in North America, have in it. Or something very similar. In 2007 consumers spent $40 billion on their pets. Forcasts for 2010 are expected to reach $50 billion in sales. It's hard to know what the best products are, for you and your pets. New products are being introducted to the market everyday, on top of the mounds of existing ones. It is important when choosing a litterbox, for your cat, to not only consider price, but also functionality.A litterbox should offer the customer solutions to the common problems a litterbox brings. Namely mess and odor. If your litter box can't provide you with solutions to those basic problems; then it is time the change litterboxes. As you will see sometimes the best products can be functional and affordable. This litterbox critique will provide consumers with information that will help them to make an informed decision about their next litterbox purchase.
The Common Litter Pan
Pros:-The basic litter pan/tray can be found in stores for about $10-$20 depending on its size.-Come in a range of sizes/colours.-accomodates multiple cats.Cons:-The basic pan is wide open; no privacy for cat.-Litter is easily spread throughout the litterbox area and your home.-no odor control-Other animals have access to pan.-not an appealling look, embarrassing, you need to hide it.Although the basic pan/tray is affordable it is not functional. Usually made of porus plastic that will trap and hold odor and moisture. Not a long lasting product. Liners are usually required. But the biggest concern with this type of litterbox is that there is not protection from spraying litter. Your cats natural instincts become your worst mess. Finally, most of the litter that ends up on the floor gets swept into the garbage, wasting unused litter.
The Covered Litterbox
Pros:-Ranges in price from $25-40.00-offered in a range of sizes and colours.-Provides some privacy for your cat-Controls some litter spray-easy access to pan for cleaningCons:-Most cats prefer dark, private spaces when using their litterbox. The basic covered box does not offer a completely enclosed, dark area.-Your cat steps out of the litterbox onto your floor, tracking litter throughout your home.-no odor control-Other animals can access the litter.-Litter spray will shoot out the door opening onto your floor.-Door opening requires cats to step up into the litterbox. Difficult for aging cats.-Still a litterbox you will want to hide.
Furniture Litterbox
The Isle Bay
Pros:-Affordable retailing at $57-$85.00-Appearance allows you to put it anywhere in your home.-Front door opening allows for easy access to litter pan.-Fits into most decors.-Large enough to accomodate more than 1 cat.-Offers your cat a more private area.Cons:-Door enterance is a big whole right in the front.-Requires you purchase a large litter tray to insert inside.-No odor control-Litter spray is deposited directly onto your floor.-Cat has to step up into the litterbox. Difficult for older cats.-Not really very attractive
The Littermaid
Is This The Litterbox That Will Solve Your Problem?
Pros:-Never have to scoop again.-charcoal filter to control odorCons:-Retail starting at $99.00-Litter is still required, problem of sprayed litter outside the littermaid still exists.-What do you do if your Littermaid stops going, the cat won't.-Replaceable parts required for operating.-Other animals have complete access.-Little to no privacy for your cat.-Still not that great to look at.
The Litter Genie
What About This Monster
Pros:-Never have to scoop litter again.-Dome accessories available-Multiple cat useCons:-Retailing at $300.00-Must be setup next to a water source.-Cannot be put anywhere in your home-Not recommended for cats under age 6 months-Accessories and cartridges required (extra costs)-Not very attractive-Machanical parts that can wear over time-Older cats may have difficultly stepping up into the litterboxOverall an innovative product, but with the cost of water and hydro; as well as the cost of the unit, the Litter Genie is costly to own and operate.
The Litter Robot
Can You Afford To Own This Litterbox?
Pros:-Never have to scoop again!-No more odor!-No wasted clean litter.-No cartridges required.Cons:-Retailing at $359.00-Operates only with Hydro; more expense to operate.-Not very attractive. Still should hide it away.-Some training required to get cat to use the Litter Robot.-You need a backup litterbox incase of breakdowns.
The LitterHouse Litterbox
Could This New Litterbox Be The Answer?
Pros:-Retailing at $79.99-Fully enclosed, 95% of sprayed litter remains inside the house. Never vaccum or sweep again. No more tracking litter mess.-Chimney charcoal filter controls odor-Patented walkway collects litter from cats paws.-Made from durable high desity polystyrene, so odor and moisture can't seep into the plastic.-No liners required.-Keeps other animals out of litter.-Looks great in any room!-This litterbox could be easily converted to a lounge house for your cat or small dog.Cons:-Regular scooping required.-12 pieces to assemble.-Only available in blue, at this time.-Only recommended for cats upto 22lbs.Visit us at www.litterhouse.comand see why we think the LitterHouse is the best litterbox on the market today. Competitively priced and the LitterHouse is the most functional litterbox available.

The Results
By 2010 consumers of pet products will be spending $50 billion annually. I have personally contributed to this wealth in the pet industry. I purchased and tried, many of the types of litterboxes mentioned above. None of the litterboxes I purchased made me happy about my cats litterbox. The LitterHouse is a new product on the market this year. The invention was directly inspired by Sox, our cat. Why have a big whole in the front of the litterbox? We patented a walkway and attached it directly to the litter pan and put four walls around it.Now Sox has his own house. I scoop as usual and never have to vaccum or sweep. Easy, quick cleaning. Sox loves his LitterHouse and so do I.We spend so much money on our pets to keep them happy and healthy, why not buy a product such as a cat litter box that works! How to clean your LitterHouse litterbox effectively
The LitterHouse is a fully enclosed litter box for cats that adds warmth and charm to any room in your home. Inorder to keep your cat happy here are some important cleaning tips. First, use the handles disguised as gable vents on each side to lift the house assembly from the litter pan. Second, disconnect the 1/2 inch walkway from the pan. This walkway collects litter from your kittens paws making reuse of the spilt litter easy. Empty contents into pan and reconnect. Third, use a litter scoop to remove soiled contents from pan. An important maintenance tip is to use tray liners for your LitterHouse pan. This makes clean up even easier. Once a month remove entire contents from litterbox and gently wash and rinse pan using a pet safe cleaner. Dry off and pour in fresh litter. Daily clean up for less than 5 minutes is recommended your cat will be very happy. Finally, using gable vents as handles, lift the LitterHouse and reposition back onto litterpan. It is important to do this step gently to ensure correct placement. This way the unique all around lip can seal and prevent litter and messy spills. And don't forget about the odor blocking charcoal filter in the chimney. The LitterHouse a fully enclosed unique and antique litterbox you will be proud to own.
